Just looking at this picture makes all the cuts on my forearms tingle.
Yep that’s a headlight out on my Outback. Why do I say “fuck?” Because I love Subaru but....WHY THE FUCK DID YOU MAKE IT SUCH A COCK SUCKING SON OF A BITCH TO CHANGE A HEADLIGHT!?!?
Why is it so difficult to change the bulb, well let’s delve into the process a little bit.
Step one is you have to remove three clips holding the front of the inner fender. Then you have to push the inner fender out of your way so that you can reach your hand inside to get to the COVER that gives you access to the bulb!
See that grey circle?
Yup, the bulb is behind that.
Now that we have access to the cover, you must use damn near super human strength to turn it to pop that bitch off. I got pretty angry at this point and didn’t take anymore photos for a bit. Something they should mention is that bulb has to fit in the housing perfectly or else you can tip the bulb which makes your low beams useless. Ask me how I know.
This is the driver’s side. FUCK!
Once I got it all done, it was nice to have working headlights again. I also replaced the side marker bulbs on both sides because they were also burnt out and you can only access them from the inner fender. Also, Outbacks burn out headlights constantly if you leave your lights on AUTO. What the fuck?
You can’t see it to well but yeah, my arm is pretty scraped. Luckily not bleeding but that’s from years of scraping the hell out of them.
Just in case you were wondering what I was wearing, yes that is a Llamacorn. Best workout shirt.
If you made it through that mess, thanks for reading my rant.

My wife had a 2004 Impreza. The headlights were fairly simple.
The front marker lights were a whole other story: remove grill, remove tabs from front off inner fender on side you’re working on, loosen bumper on that side, bounce on bumper to push it down till you can pull out the headlight housing, and now you can get to it.

I have a headlight out on the G6. Shop manual says to remove the front bumper to remove the headlight housing. YouTube has shown that you can just remove the clips on top and “massage” the bumper cover to be in a position where you can jerk the housing free. I’ve done this 3 times in the last year, the last time after I get the enclosure out the damn headlight works. Pretty sure its a corroded connector...

The best part is the Legacy/Outback has had some kind of weird electical quirk that causes them to eat passenger side headlights like candy. Best part is it is a multi generational issue covering the 4th, 5th and to a lesser extent the 2nd and 3rd generations of the Legacy platform. We went through 2 or 3 bulbs a year on both my Dad’s 2005 LGT and my Mom’s 2010 3.6R.

On my Forester I need to take out one 10mm bolt for the passenger side headlight and remove the battery for the driver’s side.

That’s pretty awful! I think someone here has a Kia that requires the entire front bumper to be removed to replace the bulb.

Last time a headlight went out on my E46 I changed it while pumping gas, and finished before the pump finished pumping about 12 gallons.
Our Volvo, though, has a mechanism where you can easily remove the WHOLE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY with two little pins, and change bulbs easily. I posted about it here, and it’s fairly common, so it seems. I say it should be required to be that simple!

I had to replace one on my wife’s car, found online that it was supposedly easier to remove the bumper.
I’m not sure it was quicker, but overall wasn’t that hard, and I replaced both bulbs while I had it open.

Think that’s bad? My neighbor has an SRX. Step 1 is to essentially disassemble the entire front end from the wheel wells forward.

On my Volvo you pull a pin and the whole headlight comes out. I just had to change on the other day. It took 12 minutes or so on the kitchen counter. Jealous?

My parents first gen Honda Fit/Jazz has the same problem. I now put the car on Jack stands and take the front wheels off. That way you can pull the cover waaaay back making it much easier, but even so it’s still a pain in the ass.

This is how you do it in an XC70.
Two metal tabs, whole unit slides out. Work on as needed, replace when done. Great system, though it’s now obsolete since the SPA cars have LED bulbs.

Agreed. Garbage design, I lost a bit of blood changing the bulb on my 2011 Outback. Meanwhile the 996 has a tool that goes in a socket and a quarter turn later the entire headlight releases. I’d expect those 2 procedures to be reversed.

Could not be more timely... there was nothing wrong with the old sealed beam tech.
Funny enough, one of my headlights on my MR2 burned out today. Went to O’Reilly Auto Parts and bought two brand new sealed beams for a grand total of $30 and I’ll be installing them tomorrow. Will post video to Oppo...

it would be better if Subaru didn’t use H7 bulbs that pop every 5 minutes too.
H7 globes are the problem not leaving the headlights on auto
